Slovenia

26 09 2010

You would think, that since all I have to do all day is push the pedals for as long as I wish, I could manage the odd blog post. And you’d be right. But even the diary has suffered, I’m 19 days behind with that, and all I have to do is pick up a pen.

Part of the reason is Slovenia. It ha been the country with the biggest surprise for me so far. Rolling out of the rain and floods of Hungary, and crossing the border met with sunshine. I don’t know how it happened. Something tells me it was good luck. Ljubljana has just had a flood, the 1 in 100 year flood, but all I saw was sunshine, good roads and mountains. For a few days at least.

I spent a few nights in Ljubljana (now I can pronounce it, I like that name – not as cool as Puty though, when you learn how to pronounce that!). The sun shone, Albert (my host found via warmshowers.org) showed me pictures of the mountains… So now I’ve spent 3 days doing a loop in Slovenia that was distinctly the wrong direction for travelling to Australia. But it was great fun riding up the valleys, crossing another mountain pass and spending the night with some WA folk on top of said mountain pass. Being chased by a woman with an axe probably wasn’t the highlight – but I met some great people that let me sleep on the porch of a log cabin, and then inside a train station… Actually, everyone is super friendly here. Most can get buy in English, but it’s more fun trying to communicate with me speaking bad Spanish and them replying in Italian.

It’s great. And considering I wasn’t even planning on entering the country, it’s been a good one. Even the soaking rain I’ve had for the last two days hasn’t dampened my enthusiasm (completely). I think I can see a France/Italy/Austria/Slovenia tour coming up some time in the future.

Hi Gray,

How are you? Not sure you remember me, but I have been following your website for a while. I am Gerard, one of the two Catalan guys you met up in the North of Spain in the end of August on your way to Pamplona. We were riding all over Euskal Herria region.

I am glad to read you are successfully making your way to Australia, while visiting at the same time so many cities in between. About Slovenia, I have to admit that it is one of my favourite European countries. Three years ago, I spent an academic year as an exchange student and travelled all around its great mountains. Besides, I keep this lovely country deep in my heart since it was the first country where I travelled by bicycle (can check the pictures on http://picasaweb.google.es/gerard.castella/2009EsloveniaAmbBicicleta#). Not aware where you cycled through, but in my opinion, one of the most spectacular rides in the country are placed within the boundaries of Triglav National Park. Made it up to Vrsic, the highest cycling point? Did you climb up to Triglav (on foot)? Well, if not, take note: it is said that you are not a complete Slovenian until you have climbed Triglav, so you now have a good reason to come back! 🙂

As for me, in one month time I will be heading off to Ecuador. 7 months of work are awaiting me, and then, if everything goes alright, I’ll try make my way down through Andes by bicycle as well. As you commented, your website will provide plenty of useful information for this future adventure.

Well, I sincerely wish you the best all along your ride. Keep us informed so we can follow your epic ride.

Cheers!

PD: if you give me your email, I’ll send you the picture we appear the three of us together.

Yes! I went past Bled, and over Virsic, but didn’t do any walking around (it rained like crazy the morning after I arrived at Visric). It is very pretty up there…

Are you able to elaborate on the woman with the axe? Drama!

I think it’s probably best if I didn’t. Lets just say: no one was hurt and I managed to find an alternative place to sleep that night 🙂
